THE MEAT INDUSTRY

CANADIAN RABBIT MEAT

Rabbits are the third post popular pet in North America, yet in Canada alone upwards of 650,000 rabbits are slaughtered for meat annually.  Every single day, 2,687,079 of these innocent little individuals are slaughtered in slaughterhouses.

They are raised in confinement, the victims of over breeding, disease, stress, dangerous transport and inhumane slaughter practices.

They are confined in bare wire cages which leads to lack of mobility, stress and health disorders, often receiving veterinary care. Physical and psychological needs are ignored.

MEAT RABBITS ARE SENT TO SLAUGHTER AT 10 WEEKS OLD

The baby rabbits are loaded into trucks and shipped off for slaughter, often denied food and water during the long, stressful trip while exposed to extreme temperatures.

THE MEAT INSPECTION ACT DOES NOT REQUIRE RABBITS TO BE RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS PRIOR TO BEING SUSPENDED FOR SLAUGHTER

Once hanging, the rabbits may be electrocuted or given a blow to the head in an attempt to render them unconscious. Inevitably, the rabbits struggle and are not always rendered unconscious prior to having their throats slit or being decapitated. These kill methods are gruesome, resulting in immense and unnecessary suffering.

What can you do?

  • Do not support any restaurants that serve rabbits – and let them know why you will not eat there!
  • Talk to your local grocery store. If they sell rabbits, let them know they are loosing your business until they remove rabbits from the meat counter! You can let them know you have rabbits as pets and find it very offensive to see them being sold as food.
  • Educate! Ask for us the below postcards (why love one but eat the other) which can be left in supermarkets that do carry rabbits, pinned up on telephone poles, left in dr’s offices, vet clinics etc.
  • Talk to family and friends, educate them on the cruelty of the rabbit meat industry.
